how we work
Furbish Company recognizes the growing interest in "green" building is driving demand for low-impact, on-site solutions to building functions. We understand that innovative systems may be perceived as risky and unproven, so we commit ourselves to learning how these systems work and to nurturing relationships with dependable suppliers that stand behind their products.
We mitigate the perceived risk of "unconventional" systems and simplify sourcing of these systems to building owners and general contractors. The ability to successfully offer innovative solutions requires involvement in every stage of project execution. Thus, our services address each stage of the development process. |

product selection
Developing innovative products and achieving market penetration with those products requires very different talents. We seek to build relationships with plant-based product innovators who have developed well-thought-out products with proven performance capability. Before we accept a product into our offerings, we confirm the innovator's ability to stand behind the product with:
- quantifiable product performance expectations,
- engineering and design capability,
- technical data,
- specifications and details,
- warranty protection.
We deliver value to the innovator by achieving market penetration for their products. A fundamental asset of our firm is the underlying mutually beneficial relationship with our system providers.
We value relationships with Roofscapes, Inc., Green Roof Services, Tremco, Sarnafil, for living roofs; Nedlaw Living Walls for the Naturaire biofilters, Midwest Products Group for Hercules and Green Wall Ventures for "new product" retaining walls.

design development Cost effective incorporation of innovative systems into project design requires whole systems thinking and early planning. Thus, our sales efforts are focused on project designers - architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, specifiers, and project owners. The economic benefit of any building system should be evaluated by its impact on overall project costs; not just the cost of the specific product. That is, paying more for a particular product may be cost justified by savings generated elsewhere in the project. For example, a living roof is a storm water management system to be evaluated during the civil engineering process; not a roofing system to be compared to other roofing options. The cost of a living roof is never appealing when compared to other roofing. Rather, it is justified by reduction of on-ground stormwater management infrastructure costs. Sometimes, the reduction of the on-ground stormwater management systems (such as a smaller retention pond) allows for greater building density on the site. Only a small increase in FAR provides increased asset value far exceeding the additional cost of a living roof. It is this whole-systems thinking that fosters the successful incorporation of innovative products into building design. Furbish Company gets involved early in the process. Our sales and marketing efforts focus on the design process. We offer education not only about specific products/systems, but on their overall impact on the initial construction and operating budgets. bidding
Furbish Company provides detailed pricing to the contractor executing the job. General contractors want to deliver innovative building solutions, but they also need to manage schedules and budgets. They need reliable subcontractors that can deliver on time and on budget.
We understand the commercial construction process. Our bidding recognizes site specific conditions and the relationship of our work to other trades. The more innovative the building system, the more critical this becomes. For example, a living wall biofilter installation requires careful coordination with framing, partition, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and lighting trades. Sequencing of on-site activities may be different from the norm. Our proposal process identifies these issues and helps the GC understand how our scope, price, and schedule relate to his/her overall project plan. |

construction
Our core competency is project execution. Effective field execution is driven by advance planning. Before sending a crew to the field, our project managers are coordinating shop drawings, verifying field dimensions, coordinating schedules with the GC, and monitoring field conditions. Procurement often requires custom fabrications or long-lead time ordering. Success in the field occurs only when these advance project planning activities are well-managed.
All of our project managers are LEED AP and have worked as installers of our systems. They manage projects only after developing intimate knowledge of the systems – not only the understanding of how the system is to perform, but also familiarity with handling the materials on-site. Our PMs know the tricks of the trade for installing our systems and making them perform to spec.
Delivering innovative systems requires thoughtful field crews who perform efficiently while respecting relationships to other trades. Our field crews are not just "task doers"; they are thinkers and learners. And above all, safety is the highest priority at all times. |

building operations
Our commitment to clients is that our systems work. All of our systems are commissioned to verify actual performance is occurring as specified. This requires follow-up visits to make adjustments, monitor performance, and verifying client satisfaction that what was promised is what was delivered.
Since our systems involve living organisms, we provide appropriate maintenance to ensure these systems naturalize and stabilize. As with any living machine, ongoing maintenance is required. We provide maintenance tailored to the client's needs. We structure the least cost approach that ensures on-going success. If the client provides appropriate personnel, we can train and oversee those people performing routine tasks and thereby minimize our costs. Likewise, we can provide full-service maintenance that requires no client participation if that is preferred. Our interest is successful operation of the system at lowest cost to client and we tailor our services to fit our client's needs. |
